One of a Kind by Design: Inside a Custom Bouquet Preservation

There is no template in my studio. No standard layout, no repeatable formula, no piece I could make twice even if I tried. Every preservation that leaves my hands is designed around one specific bouquet, from one specific day, for one specific couple, and that's exactly the point. Your bouquet only existed once. The piece it becomes should be just as singular.

I want to show you what that actually looks like, so let me walk you through a recent custom order, from a spring wedding bouquet to the finished heirloom.

A Spring Celebration

The Bouquet That Started It

This bride carried spring itself down the aisle: coral dahlias, peach garden roses, lavender sweet peas, purple statice, snapdragons, freesia, and trailing eucalyptus, loose and garden-gathered and absolutely bursting with color.

For a preservation artist, a bouquet like this is a dream. Color, variety, and texture are the three things that give me the most to work with, and this one had all three. If you've read my guide to which flowers preserve best, you'll recognize nearly every bloom in this bouquet from that list.

Designing Something That Exists Nowhere Else

Here's the part of my process that makes every piece one of a kind: I don't design the piece until I see how her flowers dried.

Every bloom dries in its own way. Some hold their exact color, some deepen, some soften into shades that didn't exist on the wedding day. So once this bouquet came out of drying, I sat with the preserved blooms the way a painter sits with a palette, choosing the flowers that had dried most beautifully and arranging them into a design built around what made her bouquet hers: the peach garden rose that anchored everything, the sweet peas in that unmistakable lavender blue, ranunculus, tulips, and threads of eucalyptus to carry the garden feeling through.

She received layout designs, chose her favorite, and from there her flowers were cast in crystal clear resin, layer by careful layer, in a hexagon she'll display for decades.

The Finished Heirloom

The final piece holds the best of that April day. The colors have settled the way preserved flowers naturally do, a little softer, a little deeper, less like a photograph of the bouquet and more like a memory of it. And that's what I mean when I say heirloom: not a decoration, but the actual flowers from the actual day, made permanent. Something to sit on a shelf at the first anniversary and still be there for the fiftieth, then be passed down with a story attached.

No one else will ever own this piece, because no one else carried these flowers.
